Two expert nursing researchers discuss the scope of the issue, both pre- and post-pandemic, and outline the systemic issues that led to this crisis. Recruitment and retention efforts are illustrated, with the goal of sharing best practices for attracting and retaining skilled healthcare clinicians. In addition, efforts to promote patient safety during periods of suboptimal staffing are explored, with examples of organizational responses to the staffing challenge facing every healthcare system across the United States.
